Before Fame
She studied with such famous Bharata Natyam dancers as Padma Subrahmanyam and Chitra Visweswaran and had a successful career as a dancer and choreographer when she was in her twenties.

Family Life
Her three aunts-- known collectively as the Travancore sisters-- were well-known Indian actresses and dancers. Shobana adopted a daughter named Ananthanarayani in 2010.
