She graduated with her degree in anthropology from Swarthmore College. She would later gain her master's degree in social anthropology from London School of Economics in 1981.

- She was Costa Rica's candidate for UN Secretary General in 2016. She founded the Center for Sustainable Development in the Americas in 1995.
Family Life
She shares two daughters named Naima and Yihana with her husband Konrad von Ritter. Her father José Figueres Ferrer was a three-time president of Costa Rica.
